well she does have a ton of talent, so maybe she'll change her style at some point and writing less disposable songs.  Er.

i agree i wish the telephone song matched the video.

still LOVE bad romance as a song though.

yeah, bad romance is super awesome as a song.

i wish she'd done something this extreme for that video rather than pull out all the stops for such a 'meh' song.

i have had parts of it stuck in my head all day i'll give her that... it's more annoying than nice though.

I’m mystified by the laziness of people looking at how she presents herself, and somehow assuming that implies there’s a high level of intelligence in the songwriting. Her approach to image is really interesting, but you listen to the music, and you just hear glow sticks. Smart outlets for musical journalism give her all this credit, like she’s the new Madonna.

But there’s not much in her music to distinguish it from other glossy, formulaic pop. She just happens to wear slightly weirder outfits than Britney Spears. But they’re not that weird – they’re mostly just skimpy. She’s fully marketing her body/sexuality; she’s just doing it while wearing, like, a ‘fierce’ telephone hair-hat. Her sexuality has no scuzziness, no frank raunchiness, in the way that, say, Peaches, or even Grace Jones, have – she’s Arty Spice! And, meanwhile, she seems to take herself so oddly seriously, the way she talks about her music in the third person, like she’s Brecht or something.

—    Joanna Newsom on Lady Gaga

found this on tumblr,
and joanna n. just totally summed up my whole feeling for lady g here.

oh joanna, how i love you more now.

Joanna Newsom sounds bitchy-jealous. I think it's unprofessional when artists talk public shit about each other like that.

I love Joanna Newsom's music, saw her live just last month. But her cattiness makes me lose a little respect for her. I mean, she can throw stones all she likes, but she's got that Manic Pixie Dream Girl albatross around her own neck.

well, i don't think she sounds bitchy jealous, maybe just sort of laughing at lady gaga,
so just bitchy Tongue , def. not jealous
i think she points out a feeling some people have towards lady gaga.

idk, i just saw this, and was like, "finally, someone said the things i thought about lady gaga, but in a more...intelligible manner than i could"
and that i wasn't the only one who felt that way about lady gaga so strongly.

I need different music for different needs.  i don't want to be thoughtful or deep all the time.  that's boring.  sometimes i'm like "fuck it, let's dance."

sometimes what i want from my pop culture is an experience that I couldn't just have on the street.

new music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niqrrmev4mA&feature=player_embedded
I... I think I actually kinda like what Gaga's doing here.  Not that I have anything against her really, I have always liked her "out of the box"-ish and over the top approach to her career but this video seems to say more than her others (and I'm honestly not quite sure exactly what since there's a lot going on)... but there's definitely some interesting commentary on war, religion, sexuality and gender. hmmmmmmm, I'm interested to hear your opinionss

I like Lady Gaga, the new clip is interesting and all but... yesterday I read something that really clicked for me about her, like, "the industry just got all Madonna's career and is speedying it really fast, a song, a choreography, a video, and there it is, Lady Gaga".

In a way, makes sense. I mean, Gaga has a great voice, is talented, but that isn't really explored at all, the songs are hits, but are weak. To stay she will have to break up with the model of the own industry that created her and redefine herself. But in the times we live nowadays, where pop idol is eating pop idol day after day, I don't know if she will have the chance to do that.

i would rather listen to lady gaga than joanna newsom any day of the week, or hear anything that comes out of her mouth. i find it hilarious that someone who has made a career on being cutesy and twee would call lady gaga "arty spice" as an insult.

anyway, i really like alejandro. it's like abba but it doesn't make me want to kill myself. it's not my favorite video of hers, though.

It was pretty disappointing to read Newsom's remarks. It was just so catty and childish and unprofessional.  Sad

Oh, she's TOTALLY a Manic Pixie Dream Girl......but I love her melodies and her lyrics (girl does NOT understand the power of the beat, however, which i think is part of why she doesn't get Gaga. Gaga is a powerhouse at creating a driving beat). I hated her voice for a long time and it just weirdly clicked one day when I gave her a 17th chance.

I quite like Ys but I don't like everything else Joanna has ever done, leaving me to suspect that what I liked about Ys was Van Dyke Parks and not Joanna. I can tolerate Lady Gaga but I hate her production values and how her songs can get terribly repetitive (though less so than a lot of other pop acts).

In her interview with Rolling Stone, Lady Gaga says: "When I wake up in the morning, I feel just like any other insecure 24-year-old girl. Then I say, 'Bitch, you're Lady Gaga, you get up and walk the walk today.'"

This is true. I do think the newsom quote was bitchy -- and I do not like newsom either -- but I do think it's funny how Gaga talks about aesthetics and obviously thinks herself rather deep. I say thinks herself, because I don't get the sense that she is. Her views on art are totally banal, and I think everything would come off a lot better if she didn't try to give the sense that she is "artistic". As a cultural phenomenon it is interesting, particularly in America -- I get the sense that the "art" is taken seriously -- which is funny. But I do think that this sense that she is "deeper" than most "pop" is one reason for the way she gets away with not having the labels that other "pop" artists (Britney, etc) have been slapped with. I think that it is unfair. I actually prefer Britney -- I find her more honest! On the other hand there is something either deeply liberating (or disturbing, depending on your point of view) in the way her music is self-parodic, in that it is conscious of its kitsch and laughs at its own (lack of) content -- that is a serious thing, moreso than any "arty" view that she expresses -- and that it heralds... perhaps a new era of pop. I am tempted to say a Brave New World of pop -- Orgy Porgy, Ford and fun, kiss the girls and make them One. The feminism inherent in self-objectification is a troubling subject (I'm talking about her overt hypersexualisation of herself, which also has parodic overtones) and I haven't decided what to make of it yet. Of course I am a total wet blanket and not lady gaga fan material.

Indeed! That’s more or less what I was trying to say with my first post in this thread.

I do think it’s wrong for artists to bash each other like that, but I also believe that is a pretty accurate assessment of the lady gaga phenomena.

As a musician I guess this kinda annoys me. I would like her a lot better if she was a model or something of the sort I think. We got to admit it; her notes are not fit to so much as lick the bottom of Thom’s shoe. But, as Clovly said, different music for different needs, for dancing/working out I wouldn’t at all mind listening to lady gaga, and there for, I don’t mind at all that someone is out there making it. I just dont think she's as big of a deal as she has made herself to seem.
