Happy Birthday BBC 6 Music - 8 years old today. Something worth celebrating: I mean, when Chris Moyles and Ken Bruce aren't for you - and Radios 1 and 2 strive to appeal to ever younger and older listeners - where else can you turn? Happy Birthday 6 Music, and all you other nerdy music lovers everywhere....now let's fight for many happy returns. Jonny read: "fight" actually does link to facebook eta: apparently jonny took down the post to fix the link and in the process of putting it back up managed to fuck up the site design

Mark Radcliffe is the reason I listen to Radio 2. I've been listening to him since the early '90s, when he was on Radio 1 before John Peel and had his poetry slot for which Jonny read poems. (Jonny posted on DAS!!)

embarrassing confession: it was a cold rainy october morning in oxford, and i'd had a particularly bad night. i woke up and the cat was NOT sleeping on my face which made me . for some reason i decided to check das before i left at 7:30am for my tutorial, which was an hour long walk away, and jonny had updated das with an office chart. (room music, i think.) and it warmed my heart and made my day at least 89% better

Huh. I wonder if Jonny has Facebook. (I admit when I think of 'people least likely to have Facebook', Jonny's quite high in the list...) Still, I'm glad 2/5 of the camp have shown their support now.

How do you fill your day? How does anyone fill their day? I think the truth is you fill your day most of the time by being in the washing machine of your own mind, thinking, "What's this? When does it stop? Am I enjoying it? I don't know. Oh, it's time to go to sleep! I can't, I'm worried."

Maybe he's having his daughter type for him? I like the image of her sitting on his lap typing what he says. It would explain the spelling.

I really doubt he would have bothered spelling 'you're' instead of 'your' if he had used his i-phone. And I don't know much about British dialects, but 'sumfing' to me seems just like lolcats lingo.

yeah, I googled it afterwards. I'm still really unhappy about how Thom uses language like that to transport something serious (no offense to anyone from Essex or any other dialect in general). His style of writing is very purposeful and I don't think any mistake he makes is there by accident or lazyness. He said himself that he is annoyed how certain circles create their own sort of language to prevent others stepping into their circle and I suppose he's mocking this attitude. Yet I think that this might lead to people not taking serious what he is trying to say.

So writing shit correctly is "journalism school style" now? I don't mind Thom as a spokesperson; actually I found him surprisingly eloquent in the Copenhagen summit interviews. I also don't mind if he fucks up his punctuation or doesn't capitalise properly - but "you're" instead of "your" is coming damn close to unforgivable.

I just realised that you may have thought that the was directed at you. It wasn't; it's a for Estuary English. The spelling/punctuation, though: I suspect Thom is dyslexic, or at least mildly so. And punctuation and grammar are taught so badly (if at all) in this country that I'm amazed when anyone demonstrates that they know the rules of both. I know that sounds patronising, but I reckon 95% of my undergrad AND post-grad students had no conception of what constitutes a paragraph, or when to use a punctuation mark (let alone which one), or why a thesis statement is necessary and how to defend it. Moreover, if you were to read our national newspapers - and I'm talking about The Guardian and The Independent here, not The Sun - and saw the number of spelling/grammar/punctuation mistakes I see on a daily basis, you wouldn't believe it. *wags finger at National Curriculum*
